Baltimore is served by the Basil Joint Fire District. The Fire District serves the Village of Baltimore and the adjoining Liberty Township and has a coverage area of more than 48 square miles.
The Fire District is governed by a Board of Fire District Trustees. The five-member Board includes a Baltimore Village Council member, a member of the Liberty Township Trustees, a resident of the Village, a resident of Liberty Township, and an at-large position that can be filled by a resident of the Village or the Township.
Under the Ohio Revised Code, the Fire District Trustees may exercise the same powers as are granted to Township Trustees with regard to fire protection services, including, but not limited to, the adoption of a fire code, purchasing fire and ambulance equipment, appointing firefighting personnel, and levying a tax for fire protection.
Rob Cooley is the Fire Chief. He was appointed Chief by the Fire Board on Janaury 1, 2002 and has been with the Fire District since 1987. The Fire District is currently staffed with fulltime, parttime and volunteer personnel. There is a 3-person medic-level crew on station 24 hours a day. There is a full paramedic crew in the district at all times.
The Fire District operates out of two stations. The main station is located on Washington Street in the Village. It has all of the District’s offices, a conference room, equipment bays, and sleeping and eating facilities. Seven vehicles are housed in this station.
The second station is located on Stoudertown Road in Liberty Township. It has one multipurpose room and three equipment bays. Three pieces of equipment are housed in this station.
